If you've been looking for trend information online, you may have noticed that there's very little free information available + the paid products are super expensive (+ I mean seriously expensive, a WGSN membership is £10000 per YEAR!). For many startups trend information is important as they want to keep their trend conscious customers happy + be relevant to the press, but the costs are way out of budget for a new business. So, I decided to start providing my subscribers to a free trend board each month. There's absolutely no costs involved, it's just my way of saying thank's for following along! If you want to sign up for future trend boards, you can do so below. Your details are safe with me + won't be shared with anyone else + of course you can unsubscribe at any time. Subscribers receive the boards in advance of anyone else; this Zanzibar theme was shared with them 2 months ago!
The Zanzibar theme is really interesting + has surprisingly widespread appeal. The inspiration comes from traditional African textiles, tribal motifs + African animal prints, particularly zebra, giraffe + leopard. There's a real opportunity here to be noticed, by using clashing prints + garment shapes with lots of volume, but you could also use modern, streamlined shapes, with a Zanzibar print to create a more modern look. I worked on this style with a client recently + it came together beautifully + suitable for a wide audience (can't wait to share that with you one day!).
Last year I went to an exhibition in Brighton, England, with a focus on African designers. It was an exciting infusion of print, bold shapes + intricate detailing. In the example below (on the right), this particular outfit may not be considered wearable by many, but by removing the trousers + perhaps altering the sleeves, this could have mass appeal (if that's what your brand is trying to achieve!). Of course, if your audience are looking for something more alternative, which they can make a statement in, this trend is perfect!
For this post, I thought I'd have a bit of fun + use one of the prints I made for the Zanzibar collection (ready made prints available to buy for your range - you can contact me for details if you're interested!) on every item in a collection I've created previously. Although this is very full on + for my usual style I'd mix prints with some block colour, it was nice to go all out for a change + create a bright + vibrant collection! Also I feel that each individual item is actually very wearable with the print...or maybe that's just me! Feel free to share on social media with your thoughts, I'd love to hear what you think (tag @29andSeptemberStudio so I can reply to you)!
As well as Women's clothing, I also think this print could work really well for the swim market, I can picture this print design on a nice one-piece swimsuit, being worn on a beach under the palm trees....again could just be me needing a holiday!
I hope this post has given your some inspiration for your range next summer! If not (+ I appreciate this trend isn't for everyone!) don't worry, as I've got future posts planned on other trends + I welcome any suggestions in the comments below. If there's a trend you would like to see, or perhaps your struggling with an idea for your area of the market (eg, active, swim, casual, eveningwear, etc), feel free to leave a message in the comments + I'll see what I can do for you - most blog posts are as a response to questions from readers, so there's a good chance I'd be able to put something together for you!
If you're interested in having a print designed for your range, or you would like to buy one of the prints in this post, I do offer a print design service but places are very limited - so if you're considering it I'd suggest getting in touch here as soon as you can...
